Engineering Design Communications: Conveying Design Through Graphics (2nd Edition) (Paperback)

Engineering Design Communications: Conveying Design Through Graphics (2nd Edition)
Engineering Design Communications: Conveying Design Through Graphics (2nd Edition) (Paperback)
By Shawna D. Lockhart

Review & Description

Engineering Design Communication: Conveying Design Through Graphics, Second Edition, offers a new approach to the traditional engineering graphics course. This text is designed for students who are learning to use graphics, especially 3D modeling, as a tool for engineering design. The text takes a streamlined approach, emphasizing the how and why of 2D sketching, reading and visualizing objects from 2D views, and creating 3D models that will function as the design database. Case studies and industry examples illustrate ways that these skills support practicing engineers in their work. Students will learn to develop models that capture the design intent for a product or system, update properly when changes are made, and serve the many purposes associated with their role as the design database. Practical tips and step-by-step instruction support the hands-on nature of the course. The text is designed to be used with any modeling package, but it can be bundled with the SolidWorks Student Design Kit (and the authors point out specific SolidWorks tutorials that coordinate well with the chapters).. A reverse engineering project is continued through the text.

How to Become Smarter (Kindle Edition)

Customer tags: intelligence(6), book - self help - add(6), creativity(5), learning(5), brain(4), diet(4), adhd(3), depression(2), research(2), anxiety(2), engineering(2), happiness(2)

Review & Description

You can download and read this book for free (see the download link in the free sample) and you will have to pay only if you enjoy the book. This text describes techniques for improving mental abilities. Some of the things it can help you to achieve include the following:

  • Depending on circumstances, use different lifestyles that improve one or another mental function.
  • Experience euphoria without drugs and come up with new ideas, when needed.
  • Slow down and prevent yourself from making rash, impulsive decisions, when necessary.
  • Sharpen your wit, become more talkative, and entertain people.
  • When necessary, lower your mood and increase emotional tension, which can help reduce procrastination.
  • Increase your score on intelligence or general aptitude tests.
  • Concentrate on reading and writing for many hours daily.
  • Increase your grade point average if you are a student or improve your job productivity if you are a knowledge worker.
  • Get along with people and live without arguments and conflicts.
The proposed methods are brief cooling or heating of the body (water therapy) and three different "smart diets," each suitable for a different type of task. The text also describes a "depressant diet," which is not a smart diet but can improve self-control and sleep. The strict diets do not have to be used on a permanent basis and the conventional food pyramid is recommended most of the time. Several useful social skills and studying/writing techniques are also discussed as well as the role of luck in personal achievement.
Most authors in this field will tell you that you should read more books, solve mental puzzles, buy their nutritional supplements, sleep well, exercise, etc., in order to get smarter. In contrast, this book is proposing moderately cold hydrotherapy and a smart diet (which involves avoiding all dietary supplements). To give another example, most books on anger management say that you should try to change your thinking in order to overcome anger, while this book suggests hot hydrotherapy and the exclusion of certain foods from your diet. The main focus of discussion in this text is on changing the biological workings of the brain, not on pop psychology. Particularly, the book describes various combinations of diets and hydrotherapy that have the following effects: sedative/sleep-promoting, stimulant/wakefulness-promoting, attention-enhancing, antianxiety, antidepressant, mood-stabilizing (mood-lowering), and euphoriant. Additionally, existing scientific evidence of pain-reducing, fever-reducing, anti-fatigue, immunostimulatory, antinausea, antihypertensive, and anti-inflammatory effects of hydrotherapy is also presented. The possible side effects of the diets and hydrotherapy are discussed as well.
Despite its technical content, the book is written in an accessible language and has an informative summary for each chapter and a list of key points at the end of each section. Most of the claims in the bulleted list above are supported by a theory and the author's personal experience (a healthy subject). About a half of these claims are directly supported by previously published scientific studies, including the claim about intelligence tests. The author's academic transcripts and test scores have been documented and can be verified independently. You can download and read this book for free (see the download link in the free sample) and you will have to pay only if you enjoy the book. Human Factors Engineering, 3rd Edition (Hardcover)

Human Factors Engineering, 3rd Edition
Human Factors Engineering, 3rd Edition (Hardcover)
By Ernest J. McCormick

Review & Description

Many of the man-made products and environments of our civilization are created for use by people in their everyday lives or in carrying out their work activities. In many such instances the nature (i.e., the design features) of these products and environments directly influences the extent to which they serve their intended human use. This text deals with some of the problems and processes that are involved in man's effort to so design these products and environments that they optimally serve their intended use by human beings...This general area of human endeavor (and its various facets) has come to be known as 'human factors engineering', or simply 'human factors', 'biomechanics', 'engineering psychology', or (in most European countries) 'ergonomics'...This text is intended as a survey of human factors engineering. In line with this objective, the text deals with several of the most important aspects of human factors. In the case of each such topic it has been the intent to delineate it, to characterize its major dimensions and related concepts, and to present some of the research that is relevant to it. Robert Read's How To Be A Programmer (Paperback)

Robert Read's How To Be A Programmer
Robert Read's How To Be A Programmer (Paperback)
By Robert L. Read

Review & Description

This book summarizes so many things we need to know as a programmer, from a programmer 's perspective. Starting from the basic technical skills one must acquire, to managerial skills to manage a team of programmers. Emphases are put on the ethics of working as a programmer and as a member of the team. Inside this book you'll find tips on how to learn communication language among your peers, how to talk to non-engineers, and how to deal with difficult people. This book also shows us how to take a break when needed, and how to recognize when to go home, and how to communicate and negotiate with your boss, so that you won't end up working for 50 to 60 hours a week. This is a very good book, one that should be a mandatory for wannabe and professional programmers. If you happened to be a manager who supervises a hive of programmers, this book should provide you with useful insights into their minds and habits. Read more
